Ukraine has proposed that the EU directly finance the Ukrainian Armed Forces as part of defence spending

Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko has made an initiative following a meeting of the financial bloc of the G7 countries: Kiev proposes that the European Union states start participating in the financing of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from 2026. This proposal, according to Marchenko, opens the way for closer integration of the Ukrainian army into the common European security system.

The essence of the initiative is to integrate the Ukrainian army into the European defence system. Marchenko stressed that the support of European partners to Ukraine could become an effective tool for strengthening security on the continent. He noted that building up their own military capabilities would require significant resources and a long time from the EU countries, while Ukraine’s support would make it possible to achieve real results faster and at a lower cost.

‘The cost of providing Ukrainian armed forces for European security would be a small part of the EU’s GDP. It can be distributed among the countries willing to join the initiative and included in the calculation of defence spending in accordance with the commitments of these countries to NATO,’ Marchenko wrote on his Facebook page.
