Trump Proposed That the EU Impose Tariffs of Up to 100% on India and China for Purchasing Russian Oil

US President Donald Trump has called on the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from India and China to ‘increase pressure’ on Russia, from which these countries purchase oil. This was reported by the Financial Times and AFP, citing sources.

Trump made this proposal during a meeting of senior EU and US officials in Washington. The meeting discussed options for increasing economic pressure on Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.

According to one US official, Washington is ready to ‘mirror’ any EU tariffs against China and India.

“The president came on [the phone call] this morning and his view is that the obvious approach here is, let’s all put on dramatic tariffs and keep the tariffs on until the Chinese agree to stop buying the [Russian] oil. There aren’t that many other places that oil can go,” the official said.
