The President of Poland Authorised the Entry of NATO Troops into the Country

Poland’s National Security Bureau said on 14 September that President Karol Nawrocki signed a decree to approve the deployment of armed forces of NATO member countries on Polish territory. The step was taken under Operation Eastern Sentry to strengthen the defence of Europe’s eastern flank.

The document is classified, says the National Security Bureau, but it is known that it provides a legal basis for the stationing of allied forces on Polish territory.

Operation Eastern Sentry began on 12 September in response to an incident involving Russian drones. Two days earlier, about twenty drones violated Polish airspace. Some of the aircraft were destroyed by fighter jets scrambled on alert. This is the first time that Russian drones have been shot down directly over NATO territory.
