Norway, Sweden and Denmark have announced joint support for a new NATO initiative to supply US arms to Ukraine. Under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) project, the three countries will contribute about five billion Norwegian kroner – approximately $500 million. Of this amount, Norway has pledged 146 million, Denmark about 90 million, and Sweden is the largest donor among the Nordic countries with a contribution of 275 million. The funds will be used to purchase US weapons systems, primarily components and missiles for Patriot air defence systems.
PURL is a new mechanism of interaction between Kiev, Washington and NATO countries. Ukraine forms a list of the highest-priority weapons, after which the alliance’s allies determine who can supply these weapons directly or pay for their purchase from the United States. On 4 August, the Netherlands also joined the initiative. Amsterdam has pledged to finance the supply of components and missiles for Patriot to the tune of 500 million euros ($579 million).
According to US President Donald Trump, in mid-July, an agreement was reached between the USA and NATO, under which Washington will continue supplying weapons to Kiev, but European allies will now pay for them.
