Yemeni Houthi government Prime Minister (Ansar Allah movement), Ahmed al-Rahawi, was killed in an Israeli air bombing of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. Al-Jumhuriya, Aden Al-Ghad, and the Emirati portal Erem News reported.
According to Aden Al-Ghad, al-Rahawi was killed along with several of his closest associates during a meeting of government members. Sources specify that among those present were Defence Minister Muhammad Nasser al-Atifi and Houthi Chief of Staff Muhammad al-Ghamari. According to available information, al-Atifi was killed and al-Ghamari was seriously injured.
On the evening of 28 August, the Israeli army launched a series of strikes on targets in Sanaa. The Israel Defence Forces press service said the attack was directed against ‘a military target of the Houthi terrorist regime.’
Ahmed al-Rahawi took over as the ministerial cabinet chief of the Houthi government in August 2024. Yemeni media activities document that his activities were mostly administrative in nature, with crucial military decisions lying with the movement leaders.
Since autumn 2023, the Houthis have been actively attacking civilian and military vessels in the Red Sea. In November, they announced that they would strike all ships associated with Israel, calling their actions a response to ‘American-Israeli aggression’ in the Gaza Strip. In practice, however, ships from various countries have been targeted, leading to serious disruptions in international trade.
Israel, in turn, regularly strikes Ansar Allah positions in Yemen. The Houthis claim to have carried out missile attacks on Israeli targets, including Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv.
