The Iranian authorities have opposed the US getting use of the Zangezur corridor, a transport corridor between Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan exclave, which will pass through the territory of Armenia, Tasnim reported.
Iranian Supreme Leader’s Advisor on Foreign Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati said that the Islamic republic will not allow the creation of the corridor. According to him, such a corridor would turn into a ‘graveyard of Donald Trump’s mercenaries’ rather than a path belonging to the US president.
Velayati added that Iran has always opposed the establishment of the Zangezour corridor as it would lead to the redefinition of Iran’s borders and the disintegration of Armenia, as well as jeopardise the security of the South Caucasus. He called the establishment of the corridor a political plot against Iran and neighbouring countries.
The adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader added that Azerbaijan does not need a separate corridor to reach Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic as it can use Iran’s territory for communication.
Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a declaration on the renunciation of hostilities under US mediation on 8 August. The declaration states, among other things, that a transport corridor will be established between Azerbaijan and the Nakhichevan exclave.
