Hungary Files Lawsuit Against the Council of the EU

The Hungarian government has appealed to the European Court of Justice against the decision to use frozen Russian assets to finance military aid to Ukraine, according to Portfolio. The lawsuit against the Council of the European Union and the European Peace Fund was filed in July. The court accepted it for consideration on 25 August.

Budapest is trying to challenge the EU Council’s decision taken in May 2024. This decision laid the foundation for the use of frozen Russian assets to help Ukraine.

In particular, the EU authorities decided at that time to transfer almost all proceeds from frozen Russian assets to the European Peace Fund, from which EU members are compensated for the costs of military aid to Kyiv. The Hungarian authorities claim that this decision was taken without taking into account Budapest’s opinion, in violation of the approval procedures.
