Paris Grants Nicolas Sarkozy Release Under Judicial Supervision

The Court of Appeal in Paris granted the request of the prosecution and Nicolas Sarkozy’s lawyers to release him from prison and put him under judicial supervision. The former president will shortly leave La Santé prison, just a few weeks after beginning his five-year sentence.

At a hearing on 10 November, the prosecution proposed releasing Sarkozy on condition that he be prohibited from having any contact with the defendants and witnesses in the case of alleged illegal financing of his election campaign by Muammar Gaddafi’s Libyan government. The request was supported by the defence. Thus, both sides – prosecution and defence – stood united for a change of conditions. The Court of Appeal agreed.

Sarkozy became the first former president in French Republic history to receive a real prison sentence.
