Talks between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, previously announced by the White House, may in fact take place in Hungary. This was reported by Reuters, citing a senior official in the US presidential administration. According to this source, the Russian side has not yet officially indicated that it is ready to participate in the meeting.
Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has proposed neutral ground as a venue for the talks. In an interview with French television channel LCI, he said he was promoting Geneva as a candidate.
On 18 August, after the White House meeting with the Ukrainian leader and European allies in Washington, US President Donald Trump stated that he was working to organize a one-on-one meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy. The German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, who had also attended the negotiations within the White House, entered into the debate on where the negotiations would occur. According to him, the meeting could be held within two weeks.
