Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has told European allies that he allows the cessation of hostilities and the ceding of territories already under Russian control, The Daily Telegraph has reported.
At the same time, Zelenskyy, who held talks with European leaders ahead of a planned meeting between Russian and US presidents in Alaska, emphasised that Ukraine would not accept any of Trump’s proposals if they included giving up control over any other territories.
Such a position, The Daily Telegraph writes, means that Ukraine agrees to freeze the front line. At the same time, Zelenskyy, according to the publication’s sources, expects reliable guarantees in the form of arms supplies and a path to NATO membership.
The meeting between US and Russian Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin is scheduled to take place in Alaska on 15 August. According to the WSJ, the Russian president announced that he would agree to a ceasefire in exchange for Ukraine giving Russia a third of the Donetsk region, which remains under Kiev’s control. Zelensky said that Ukraine was not going to ‘give its land’ to Russia. European officials, in their turn, told the WSJ that if Ukraine handed over the entire Donetsk Region to Russia, the Russian side would have to withdraw its troops from the occupied parts of Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions.
