Trump Threatened to Raise Duties for India Over Russian Oil

The United States will ‘significantly’ raise trade duties for India as it profits from the resale of Russian oil, United States President Donald Trump has said. He did not specify by how much he would raise the tariffs and when it would happen.

‘India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA’, Trump wrote on Truth Social.

In response, India has criticised the US and the European Union for trading with Russian Federation amid President Donald Trump’s demands for New Delhi to stop buying Russian oil. The corresponding statement of the Indian Foreign Ministry was published in the social network X.

The ministry said that India started buying Russian energy carriers because traditional suppliers diverted their oil to Europe after the start of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war. The foreign ministry emphasised that at that time, the US was ‘actively encouraging’ India’s purchase of oil from Russia ‘to strengthen the stability of global markets’.

The Indian Foreign Ministry also noted that US and European Union trade with Russia is much higher than India-Russia trade.
