US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on 30 June to lift sanctions against Syria imposed in 2004 from 1 July. The document was published on the White House website.
The decree, among other things, authorises the relaxation of export control measures in force in relations with Damascus. At the same time, the document says that restrictions against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, his associates, human rights violators, as well as persons associated with the ‘Islamic State’ remain in force.
Trump also instructed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to review Syria’s status as a state sponsor of terrorism, the decision to recognise Hayat Tahrir al-Sham as a terrorist organisation and Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa as a particularly dangerous international terrorist.
The cancellation of some of the sanctions must be approved by Congress.
