Iran’s Parliament Votes to Close the Strait of Hormuz: What Does It Mean?

The Iranian parliament has voted in favour of closing the Strait of Hormuz. This is reported by Press TV.

Esmaeil Kowsari, a member of the Iranian parliament’s national security committee, said that Iran’s MPs were in favour of the need to close the strait. ‘However, the final decision on this issue is made by the supreme national security council,’ he emphasised.

On 22 June, it became known about Iran’s desire to ban the movement of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz in response to US strikes on the country’s nuclear facilities. Later, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance called this decision suicide. In his opinion, the closure of the strait would lead to economic consequences in the country as all its activities are carried out through it. Up to 30% of the world’s supply of liquefied natural gas and 20% of oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts believe this will accelerate oil prices.
