Assassination Attempt on Colombian Senator and Presidential Candidate Miguel Uribe

Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay, who was speaking at an election rally in Bogota, was shot several times during his speech. He was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Uribe was campaigning as part of his campaign – he had previously announced he would run for president in the 2026 presidential election. During his speech, according to The Bogota Post, two men on a motorbike approached the crowd, one of them dismounted and fired several shots from Uribe’s back, five or six of which hit the senator.

A firefight ensued involving Uribe’s bodyguards. As a result, the 15-year-old who shot the senator was detained (according to other reports, the detainee is 14 years old). Judging by the video, he was also wounded during the arrest. The teenager, according to El Mundo, promised to provide information about the attack ‘to keep himself alive.’ The country’s Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez said authorities are offering a reward of up to three billion pesos ($730,000) for any information available about the attack.

Uribe, aged 39, is a member of the opposition conservative Democratic Centre party founded by previous Colombian President Álvaro Uribe (namesake). Uribe’s grandfather Julio César Turbay was President of Colombia from 1978 to 1982.
