The pro-European candidate, Bucharest Mayor Nicusor Dan, has won the majority of votes in the second round of the Romanian presidential election. After processing protocols from 99 per cent of polling stations, Dan has 53.9% of the vote, according to the Romanian electoral commission, the Associated Press reported.
George Simion, the candidate of the far-right Alliance for the Unification of Romanians, who was leading in the first round, gets 46.1% of voters.
Simion won almost twice as many votes as Dan in the first round, allowing analysts to predict his victory in the presidential election, AP noted. In the first round, which was held on 4 May, George Simion won 40.5% of the vote, while Nicusor Dan came second with 20.99% of the vote.
Romania’s presidential election was held for a second time. The results of the previous vote, which took place at the end of November 2024, were cancelled by the Constitutional Court. Then in the first round of the election was won by Calin Georgescu, formerly a member of the far-right Alliance for the Unification of Romanians.
