Davos: Europe Faces the Greenland Crisis

European leaders and their delegations had planned to devote meetings at the World Economic Forum in Davos to discussing security guarantees for Ukraine, but the situation surrounding Greenland has now moved to the forefront, Financial Times reports citing sources. According to the newspaper, a meeting of national security advisers from European countries is set to take place in Davos, it was initially convened to discuss Russia’s war against Ukraine. Now, the main focus will be on Greenland.

As Financial Times notes, European leaders and their delegations, who are due to meet with Donald Trump and US officials, are urgently revising their plans. Instead of preparing proposals on Ukraine, they are developing responses to potential American tariffs and scenarios for de-escalating tensions around Greenland.

According to the FT, EU leaders are planning to hold an emergency summit later this week, likely on Thursday, following their meetings with Trump in Davos. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said that during a recent conversation, the US president showed willingness to “listen” to proposals for a possible compromise.

The escalation around Greenland occurred over the weekend. Donald Trump announced his intention to impose tariffs on eight countries that have deployed military contingents to the island. European leaders condemned the statements, while EU ambassadors convened an emergency meeting to consider possible countermeasures.

The next round of consultations is scheduled to take place as part of the World Economic Forum in Davos, which will be held from January 19 to 23. Donald Trump is expected to deliver a keynote address at the forum on January 21.
