Is the Ukrainian president not now pursuing a far more ambitious objective: merging the war in Ukraine with the US-Iranian conflict into a single strategic theater, as suggested by the Ukrainian strikes of July 25 on Iranian vessels in the Caspian Sea? <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Should the two conflicts come to merge, Ukraine would cease to be a mere recipient of American aid and would become a full-fledged actor in the confrontation waged by Washington against Tehran \u2014 while the United States, for its part, would slide from the status of arms supplier to that of active belligerent against Russia, across a crisis arc stretching from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Red Line Held by Biden, Crossed Under Trump?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2022, Kyiv has constantly pushed NATO to engage beyond the mere provision of weapons and intelligence: a no-fly zone, the delivery of ever more sophisticated systems, moving past what Zelensky considered excessive caution in the face of escalation risk. The Biden administration had nonetheless maintained a constant principle: support Ukraine without ever making the United States a direct belligerent against Russia \u2014 refusing ground troops, a no-fly zone, and only gradually yielding on F-16 aircraft and long-range ATACMS missiles, out of fear of uncontrollable nuclear escalation. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The context has now changed. The war waged by Donald Trump against Iran is a strategic failure, despite American military superiority: Tehran has demonstrated its ability to extend the conflict horizontally, to inflict losses on multiple fronts simultaneously, and to force Washington to defend interests far removed from the initial front lines \u2014 mastering escalation where Trump lacks both viable military options and diplomatic patience. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Kyiv&#8217;s Strategic Opportunity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is precisely this vulnerability that Ukraine could exploit. Rather than presenting itself as dependent on American aid, Kyiv could position itself as an ally capable of helping Washington turn this setback against Iran into a victory. Two arguments support this idea: Ukrainian expertise in drone warfare, considered the military innovation that has evolved the fastest over the past three years, and the possibility of opening a new front of pressure on Iran from the Caspian Sea \u2014 thereby turning Tehran&#8217;s own horizontal escalation strategy against it, forcing it to redistribute already limited resources.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seen from Kyiv, such an offer would change the very nature of the relationship with Washington: Ukraine would move from the status of beneficiary of American generosity to that of savior of an America in difficulty on another front.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An Uncertain Gamble, a Risk of Uncontrolled Escalation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the appeal of this diplomatic maneuver is obvious for Kyiv, it carries major risks. Attempting to solve a strategic problem by widening the scope of a conflict is likely to make both crises harder to resolve simultaneously rather than each on its own. Zelensky&#8217;s strategy could therefore prove to be double-edged: it offers Kyiv the hope of turning a war of attrition into a global strategic stake that draws in Washington more deeply, but it also risks creating a coalition of crises whose dynamics no one would truly control anymore.
