Based in Paris, he now works as an international affairs consultant.  <\/em><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1.2\">Since 28 February 2026, when the United States and Israel launched Operation &#8220;Epic Fury&#8221; against Iran, the world has been witnessing the gravest energy crisis in contemporary history. The Strait of Hormuz, through which one fifth of the world\u2019s oil previously passed, has become the theatre of a confrontation reshuffling the cards of global geopolitics. Among the major powers, one stands out for the painful singularity of its situation: India. Not because it is fighting, but precisely because it is not \u2014 and because this proclaimed neutrality is turning against it.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1.2\">Since the beginning of the conflict, the Modi government has taken refuge in a balancing act that is showing its limits. New Delhi expressed its \u201cconcerns\u201d, called for a ceasefire \u2014 without ever explicitly condemning the American-Israeli strikes, without ever naming Iran. A diplomacy of calculated silence, intended to be prudent, which today looks like a lost wager. For India finds itself trapped in a configuration it does not control: on one side Washington, its privileged strategic partner for twenty years; on the other Tehran, with which it maintained longstanding energy ties, notably through the port of Chabahar. Between the two, the Persian Gulf in flames, from which India draws nearly 50% of its crude imports.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1.2\">The figures speak to the brutality of the shock. India imports more than 85% of its energy needs and holds only around thirty days of strategic reserves, compared to nearly 300 days for China. UBS has revised its growth forecast for 2026\u20132027 down to 6.2% \u2014 against a government target of 7 to 7.4%. In mid-May, New Delhi raised petrol prices by 3% to offset losses from the shortage. On 18 May, in a public address in Hyderabad, Modi himself asked citizens to reduce their fuel consumption, limit foreign travel and suspend gold purchases. Such a direct appeal to Indians about their consumption habits has no recent precedent: it measures the scale of the shock. This setback is not merely economic. It is human, sanitary, social.       <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1.2\">Non-alignment \u2014 that Indian doctrine of maintaining relations with everyone so as to depend on no one \u2014 was supposed to protect New Delhi from this type of dilemma. It is failing to do so. Worse: it is deepening the isolation. When the BRICS countries swiftly condemned the American strikes, India said nothing. When Pakistan emerged as an indispensable mediator between Washington and Tehran \u2014 hosting negotiations in Islamabad, shuttling between the two capitals, accompanying Vice President Vance during his meetings with Iranian officials \u2014 India watched. The historical irony is cruel: Pakistan, which Modi had spent a decade rendering diplomatically marginal, is today courted by Washington as no other actor in the region. According to <em>Foreign Policy<\/em>, Modi was relegated to receiving a single phone call from Trump about the crisis \u2014 with Elon Musk listening in on the line. Meanwhile, General Asim Munir, Pakistan\u2019s army chief, enjoys direct access to the White House.       <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1.2\">The sequence is revealing. Within weeks, India found itself simultaneously cut off from Iranian oil via the blockade, and from Russian oil via the expiry of the American waiver \u2014 a sanctions exemption obtained through hard-won negotiation. Two sources of supply eliminated in quick succession, on Washington\u2019s decision, without consultation with New Delhi. The realisation that India is not as indispensable to the American project as it once believed is, according to <em>Foreign Policy<\/em>, \u201ca difficult pill to swallow.\u201d Trump, a transactional leader, has recalibrated his regional preferences: Pakistan, capable of delivering a credible mediator between Washington and Tehran, better serves his immediate needs than India.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1.2\">The truth this war lays bare is uncomfortable: non-alignment works in calm times, when the major powers coexist without tearing each other apart. It collapses the moment a crisis forces choices. India cannot simultaneously be the strategic ally of the United States and a buyer of Iranian oil. It cannot argue for autonomy while letting Washington decide its energy supplies. It cannot claim the status of a great power while abstaining from weighing in on a conflict that is bleeding it economically and weakening it diplomatically before its own neighbours.    <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"line-height:1.2\">This is not Modi\u2019s failure. It is the failure of a doctrine. And it is perhaps, paradoxically, a historic opportunity. If India wants to be the great power it aspires to become, it will need to build what non-alignment has not given it: genuine energy autonomy, strategic reserves commensurate with its standing, and assumed alliances rather than precarious balances. The Iran war did not create the flaws in Indian foreign policy.
