Support from Putin and Trump Failed to Save Orb\u00e1n"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">The opposition party \u201cTisza,\u201d led by P\u00e9ter Magyar, has secured a decisive victory in Hungary\u2019s parliamentary elections. With 98.9% of ballots counted, the party has won 53.07% of the vote and 138 out of 199 seats in parliament. This gives it a constitutional majority and the power to amend the country\u2019s fundamental law. The ruling \u201cFidesz\u201d party of Prime Minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n received 38.43% of the vote and 55 seats. Six additional seats went to the far-right \u201cOur Homeland\u201d party (5.83%). Two parties failed to cross the 5% threshold. Voter turnout reached a record 79.5%, the highest in the country\u2019s history, effectively turning the election into a referendum on Hungary\u2019s political future.       <\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">Orb\u00e1n conceded defeat just three hours after the polls closed. Speaking in Budapest, he described the results as \u201cpainful but unequivocal\u201d and congratulated the winner. \u201cWe will continue to serve the Hungarian people and our homeland from the opposition,\u201d he said.  <\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">Addressing supporters on April 13, Magyar declared that \u201ctonight, truth has prevailed over lies.\u201d According to him, Hungarians chose change and responsibility. He emphasized that the country had \u201csaid yes to Europe.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">European leaders reacted almost immediately. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said Hungary is \u201crestoring its European path.\u201d Magyar\u2019s victory was also welcomed by Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, and Keir Starmer, who called the outcome \u201ca historic moment for European democracy.\u201d Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote in Hungarian: \u201cRussians, go home.\u201d Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyalso congratulated Magyar and expressed readiness to cooperate with Hungary\u2019s new leadership.    <\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">Against this backdrop, the external support for Orb\u00e1n appears particularly notable. Donald Trump had publicly backed him, promising \u201cprosperity\u201d for Hungary if he were re-elected. On the eve of the vote, U.S. Vice President JD Vancetraveled to Budapest to support the incumbent. Orb\u00e1n is also widely regarded as one of the closest European partners of Vladimir Putin. According to media reports, Moscow may have provided informational support to his campaign, although this has been officially denied.    <\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">Magyar previously stated that he would be prepared to negotiate with Russia if necessary, given geography and the country\u2019s energy dependence, but stressed that \u201cthis would not make us friends.\u201d He also noted that Hungarian society does not want a \u201cpro-Ukrainian\u201d or \u201cpro-Russian\u201d government, but rather a \u201cpro-Hungarian\u201d one. <\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">At the time of publication, neither Moscow nor Washington had officially commented on the election results.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-post-author\"><div class=\"wp-block-post-author__avatar\"><img alt='Avatar photo' src='https:\/\/www.mondevudailleurs.ae\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/cropped-Simple-Minimalist-Creative-Studio-Logo-150-x-100-px-96x96.png' srcset='https:\/\/www.mondevudailleurs.ae\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/cropped-Simple-Minimalist-Creative-Studio-Logo-150-x-100-px-192x192.png 2x' class='avatar avatar-96 photo' height='96' width='96' \/><\/div><div class=\"wp-block-post-author__content\"><p class=\"wp-block-post-author__name\">La R\u00e9daction<\/p><\/div><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The opposition party \u201cTisza,\u201d led by P\u00e9ter Magyar, has secured a decisive victory in Hungary\u2019s parliamentary elections.
