{"id":6180,"date":"2025-10-14T16:18:51","date_gmt":"2025-10-14T15:18:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mondevudailleurs.ae\/?p=6180"},"modified":"2025-11-09T22:33:07","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T21:33:07","slug":"telegram-and-protonmail-warn-of-the-end-of-the-free-internet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mondevudailleurs.ae\/en\/telegram-and-protonmail-warn-of-the-end-of-the-free-internet\/","title":{"rendered":"Telegram and Protonmail Warn of the End of the Free Internet"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">On 10 October 2025, Telegram users received a notification pinned above all chats and channels warning of the \u2018end of the free internet.\u2019 It linked to a <a href=\"https:\/\/t.me\/durov\/452\">post<\/a> by Pavel Durov, the founder of Telegram, published on the morning of his 41st birthday. <\/p>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">In the post, Durov called for \u2018saving the free internet created for us by our fathers.\u2019 In his opinion, the internet should help people freely exchange information, but instead \u2018it is turning into a tool of control.\u2019 As examples of \u2018dystopian measures,\u2019 Durov cited France, Germany, and the United Kingdom \u2014 countries once considered free.  <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">France<\/h4>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">In France, a law on \u2018digital platform responsibility\u2019 (Loi sur la responsabilit\u00e9 num\u00e9rique) came into force in 2024, requiring social networks and messengers to store user identifiers and provide them upon request by authorities as part of the fight against \u2018disinformation and hate speech.\u2019 After that, a number of VPN services and anonymisers were blocked. Critics of the law call it a \u2018soft version of the Chinese model,\u2019 where security is used as a pretext for total control.  <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Germany<\/h4>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">Germany has updated its NetzDG 2.0 law, tightening requirements for platforms. Companies are now required not only to remove \u2018harmful content\u2019 within 24 hours, but also to hand over user data to the federal police without a court order if a post is interpreted as a \u2018threat to public order.\u2019 In 2025, journalists and bloggers who criticised Berlin&#8217;s policies on migration and energy transition fell under this rule.  <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">United Kingdom<\/h4>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">In the UK, following the adoption of the Online Safety Act, the government gained the right to require messengers to provide built-in access to encrypted messages \u2018in exceptional cases\u2019. In practice, this means the effective weakening of end-to-end encryption in services such as WhatsApp and Signal. In early 2025, several companies (including Proton and Element) announced their possible withdrawal from the British market, as compliance with the law is incompatible with the principles of user privacy.  <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ProtonMail as a Swiss Alternative<\/h4>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">Against this backdrop, the speech by ProtonMail representative Marc Loebekken at the <a href=\"https:\/\/caspianweek.org\/war-peace-and-neutrality-forum-2025\">War, Peace &amp; Neutrality forum<\/a> at the UN on 10 October was particularly telling. ProtonMail is a company born out of the protest spirit of CERN and the idea of digital independence. Loebekken recalled that the project was launched in Switzerland in 2014 as a response to \u2018massive state surveillance taking place with the complicity of big tech.\u2019 However, even Switzerland is now losing its neutral status. Switzerland, where digital privacy was once considered sacred, is now moving towards universal control.     <\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"font-size:18px;line-height:1.2\">\u2018Switzerland decided to revise its framework on surveillance and integrate a full indiscriminate data retention model, which would force all providers to collect a large amount of data about users. That goes directly against the values that Proton stands for.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p style=\"line-height:1.2\">As a result, we are seeing democratic states begin to implement the same digital control practices that they previously criticised authoritarian regimes for. Laws passed under the pretexts of \u2018security\u2019 and \u2018public good\u2019 too often undermine the very foundations that distinguish democracy from digital authoritarianism.
